Types of Welding Methods

1 What is welding?

Welding is one of thousands of methods of joining parts together.

Welding is usually used when a permanent and strong connection is required.

2 Types of welding methods

Welding methods are generally divided into 2 main categories, which are determined by the structure and method of connection of this category and include fusion and non-fusion welding.

3 Fusion welding methods

As the name suggests, at the junction of two parts, we use heat to cause the desired edges and the filler material to melt and merge together.

Since the movement of atoms and molecules in the molten state is much easier than in the solid state, the methods in this category are much more widely used than non-fusion methods.

Based on the source from which the heat required for this process is supplied, this type of welding is divided into 4 main categories.

Electron Beam or Laser
Oxy-Gas
Arc
Laser
1-3 Electron Beam Welding A new welding method (Electron Beam Welding – EBW)

In this method, a very high-energy electron beam is used to melt and create a molten metal.

The biggest advantage of using this method is the high concentration of heat at one point, resulting in a cleaner weld with a higher penetration depth and a very small HAZ area.

However, it should be noted that this method is much more expensive than all other existing welding methods.

2-3 Oxy-Fuel Gas Welding (OFW)

In this type of welding method, the burning of fuel gases is used to achieve the desired temperature.

The most widely used gas in this method is acetylene, which is why this method is also called oxy-acetylene welding.

This method is one of the most common welding methods in Iranian industry and is also known as the carbide method among traditional welders. The welding wire used in this method is metallic and uncoated. 3-3 Types of Arc Welding Methods (Arc Welding – AW) It can be said that the most widely used type of welding in the industry is arc welding. The basis of this method is to apply an electric potential difference between the welding site and the welding torch while there is a small distance between them. A torch is a welding tool that is used to connect two metal pieces and its method of operation is to ignite gas and oxygen. This distance is full of air particles, and when a potential difference is created, this environment is ionized and creates an electric arc that provides the heat needed for melting and welding.
